Alisha Griffey – Vice President, Finance & Operations
Alisha joined Verdeo Group in 2008 and is responsible for all internal operations. Her role encompasses internal finance, HR, accounting and IT. In addition, Alisha supports the company’s business development efforts and manages advisory projects.
Prior to joining Verdeo, Alisha was a partner at the Corporate Executive Board where she founded The Sustainability Forum—a research and consulting service that serves more than 100 Chief Sustainability Officers at Fortune 500 companies. Before founding The Sustainability Forum, Alisha launched a consulting, research and executive education business for general managers running $1B+ businesses. Within four years of its launch, Alisha had grown the business to over $5M in revenues and expanded the customer base to over 200 companies. Alisha has an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a BA in Economics from the University of Virginia.
Ben Apple – Vice President
Ben joined Verdeo in 2008 and works primarily on the project execution team, leading the development of projects that capture and utilize mine methane in the western U.S. In this capacity, he manages project planning, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and certification of greenhouse gas emission reductions. Ben also leads product design efforts in support of Verdeo’s technology initiatives, and supports the team with his experience in the renewable energy sector.
Prior to joining Verdeo Group, Ben was a principal consultant at ActNeutral, LLC, located in Boulder, CO. His work focused on greenhouse gas markets and the renewable energy and energy efficiency industries, helping clients anticipate and profit from opportunities emerging from climate change and resource constraints. Ben worked on projects in the mining, biogas, solar, wind, and infrastructure sectors, including financial and technical due diligence on one of the first mine methane emission reduction projects in the US. Prior to his consulting career, Ben worked in Germany at an investment bank focused on municipal-scale renewable energy projects and later at a cleantech venture capital firm. Ben worked for six years as a project manager in the US Air Force, where he managed several software and aircraft projects and advised on DARPA contract awards for innovative technologies. Ben’s final assignment in the service was as a United Nations peacekeeper in Iraq and Kuwait. Ben holds an MBA from the Wharton School, certificate degree in Public Finance from the Fels Institute, MS in Industrial Engineering, and is a distinguished graduate of the US Air Force Academy. Ben is also a member of BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt.
Dan Shumaker – Associate
Dan joined Verdeo in 2011 as an Associate. Dan supports project development and M&A transactions with financial modeling, due diligence and market research. He also monitors developments in carbon and other commodity markets in which Verdeo does business.
Prior to joining Verdeo, Dan was an Energy Analyst with the global consulting firm SRA International, consulting primarily for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency Renewable Energy. Prior to SRA, Dan worked as a Financial Analyst at Jones Lang LaSalle, the global real estate services firm serving clients on three continents. Dan has a BA in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia.
Diane Weber – Finance Manager
Diane joined Verdeo in 2011 and is responsible for day-to-day accounting at both the US corporate and project level, working closely with Sindicatum Carbon Capital’s Group Finance department in Singapore. Her primary responsibilities include management of accounts payable and accounts receivable, fixed asset/project accounting, and monthly close and reporting activities, in addition to supporting audit, tax and budget activities. Prior to joining Verdeo, Diane was a Senior Accountant at ContourGlobal, a power company that develops, acquires and operates electric power and district heating businesses, with a global presence in fourteen countries spanning four continents. Before that, she was an Accountant at Softbank Capital, an independent venture capital firm that focuses on early stage high growth technology based businesses benefiting from the rapid deployment and adoption of broadband and mobile technologies. Diane has extensive experience in intercompany transactions, cash management, and accounting for multi-million dollar acquisitions. Diane holds a MBA from the F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College and a BS in Business Administration, with concentrations in Finance and Management, from the University at Albany.
Gene Waller – Head Asset Management
Gene joined Verdeo in 2011. As head of asset management he is responsible for managing operations at all of the company’s landfill gas projects. Gene has extensive experience in the landfill gas-to-energy field, having worked with over fifty landfill gas projects in the United States. Prior to joining Verdeo, Gene worked as an Operations Manager at Pennsylvania Power Light specializing in analyzing gas systems and maximizing performance and production within the PJM. Before that, he worked with Golder Associates, where he advanced to consult and manage projects throughout the United States. Earlier in his career Gene managed landfill gas-to-energy projects and assisted with project design, implementation, and operations for Enerdyne Power Systems and focused on construction material testing and inspections while working with TitanAtlantic. Gene’s experience in landfill gas encompasses Medium BTU projects, such as boiler application for producing steam, Engine Power Generation and High BTU projects that transform landfill gas into natural gas. He has completed numerous professional certification programs and is proficient at managing Title V and NSPS compliance.
Jeff Liebert – Managing Director, CMM and VAM
Jeff Liebert was a co-founder of Verdeo Group prior to its merger with Sindicatum and leads the company’s mining practice. He works closely with mine operators to develop next generation methane utilization and emission reduction projects in the United States. He has written articles for leading industry trade magazines, including World Coal, Coal Age, American Coal Council and has been a featured conference speaker for the National Mining Association, American Coal Council, EPA’s Coalbed Methane Outreach Program, and Longwall USA.
Prior to Verdeo, Jeff was a Vice President for Climate Change Capital’s US$1 billion carbon fund, where he was responsible for developing and managing a portfolio of industrial energy efficiency and methane gas utilization projects throughout Eurasia. Jeff brings a wealth of experience investing in energy and clean technology companies as a venture capital investor, project financier, and project developer. Prior to joining CCC, Jeff led the development of the International Finance Corporation’s portfolio of clean technology investments originating and structuring over $80 million in assets, including WaterHealth International, MBA Polymers, and Turbotech. Jeff also led and structured a highly innovative $150 million risk sharing facility with the Industrial Bank of China and natural gas utility Xinao Gas to provide project financing to industrial energy efficiency projects, which was recognized by the Financial Times as one of the top sustainability deals of 2006. Before the IFC, Jeff consulted to multinational corporations on market entry strategies for China and established and managed joint venture textile factories throughout Central Asia and China.
John Savage – Managing Director, Delivery
John Savage was a co-founder of Verdeo Group prior to its merger with Sindicatum and currently leads Verdeo’s project execution activities. He is responsible for overseeing Verdeo’s portfolio of operating projects, as well as ensuring new projects are constructed and commissioned on-time and on-budget. John has over 12 years experience in the renewable energy and carbon finance markets and has been one of the pioneers of carbon offset projects in the oil & gas industry in North America, including developing the first approved methodology for reducing fugitive methane emissions.
Prior to Verdeo, John worked for Climate Change Capital and its $1 billion carbon fund on a strategy for expanding its business into the US; he also led the execution for CCC of a number of CDM and voluntary market transactions. Previously, as an executive with Green Mountain Energy, John led marketing and business development for the nation’s leading retail supplier of renewable energy. During his tenure at Green Mountain, John established Green Mountain Energy® as the leading brand of clean electricity in its target markets, helped develop wind and solar projects in several states, and led the expansion and growth of three of the nation’s Top 5 utility green power programs. John began his career as an investment banker in the Energy Group at Merrill Lynch Capital Markets.
John has a BA in History, cum laude, from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Josh Green – Chief Executive Officer
Josh Green was a co-founder of Verdeo Group prior to its merger with Sindicatum and currently serves as the CEO of Verdeo, Sindicatum’s business in North America. In this role Josh leads the company’s business development activity, including developing strategic partnerships, assessing new growth areas, and pursuing M&A opportunities. Josh has over 13 years of experience in the energy industry, focusing on investment in clean energy and emission reduction projects since 2003. He is a frequent speaker at industry events and participates in various working groups regarding the future direction of US climate policy.
Prior to Verdeo, Josh was a Vice President and the Director of Latin America at Climate Change Capital, responsible for developing and managing a portfolio of carbon investments for the firm’s $1 billion carbon fund. His career spans private equity and strategy consulting, most of it focused on the energy industry. Josh served as the Chief Operating Officer of the Massachusetts Renewable Energy Trust, a $150 million clean energy fund, where he oversaw strategy, operations and investment activity. Before that, he was Vice President of Latin America for Softbank Emerging Markets, a $250 million venture capital fund investing in technology businesses in developing countries. Earlier in his career, Josh worked with some of the leading utilities in South America as a Consultant with Monitor Group, a global strategy consultancy. Josh holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA in Geography, Economics and Environmental Studies, cum laude, from Dartmouth College. He is a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and serves on the Washington, DC regional board of Teach for America.
Kate Faulhaber – Director, Climate Change
Kate joined Verdeo in 2009 and is an experienced developer of emission reduction projects. She has a background in science and policy research with an emphasis on emerging technologies and climate change and at Verdeo is responsible for carbon project implementation. As one of the firm’s carbon policy experts, she plays an important role assessing and developing new methodologies and contributing to corporate strategy.
Prior to joining Verdeo, Kate was a Senior Project Manager at EcoSecurities, an international carbon offset developer. As part of the Implementation team, she screened projects for their emission reduction potential, developed project documentation and offset quantification, and managed projects from implementation through the delivery of carbon offsets. She also assisted EcoSecurities’ U.S. division with developing new offset sectors and managed relationships with a variety of voluntary offset standard organizations. Kate has also worked as a consultant for several institutions on other climate change issues, including the impact of sea level rise for the NYC Department of Long-Term Planning and carbon sequestration in wetlands for Ducks Unlimited. S he has studied ecology, watershed management, sustainable development and environmental policy domestically and internationally, including projects in Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Mexico. Kate holds a BS in Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master of International Affairs degree from Columbia University with a concentration in Environmental Policy.
Santosh Lakhan – Vice President
Santosh joined Verdeo in 2009 and works primarily on the project execution team. He is the company’s lead project manager on ventilation air methane (VAM) projects, as well as leading several of Verdeo’s projects in the oil and gas industry. Prior to joining Verdeo team, Santosh was a management consultant with The Boston Consulting Group and with McKinsey & Company. Santosh primarily served energy clients and, for a number of these clients, assessed and developed climate change risk mitigation strategies.
Santosh is a Mechanical Engineer and started his career in the South African mining and power generation sectors. He was responsible for the coal and ash plant operations at a 3600MW coal fired power station operated by ESKOM, South Africa’s leading power utility. Santosh then joined the Mining Technology division of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research as a Design and Development Engineer. During this period he researched, developed and implemented new technologies in South Africa’s gold, platinum and coal mines. In this role Santosh worked closely with mine leadership and engineers, both on the surface and underground, on the on-site testing and final commercialization of mechanized mining equipment. Santosh holds an MBA from NYU’s Stern School of Business, a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Natal and a Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa.
Stephanie Countess – Engineering Analyst
Stephanie joined Verdeo in 2011 as an Engineering Analyst. She provides technical, market research, and analytical support to Verdeo project and origination teams. Stephanie earned her BS in Environmental Engineering, with a concentration in facilities design and construction, from the University of Delaware. She received an honors degree with distinction, the highest undergraduate degree awarded by the university. While at UD she conducted research on alternative resources, focusing on the production of biodegradable plastics in wastewater treatment facilities. Stephanie was the 2011 recipient of the Sustainable Water Environment Award for her outstanding academic career and contributions in her field.
