Sindicatum Projects
Coal Mine Methane, US: CLIFFS, West Virginia
The Cliffs project is a CMM abatement scheme located in Pineville, West Virginia, US. The Cliffs project involves the incineration of mine methane drained from the Pinnacle underground coal mine. The project is intended to be certified under the Climate Action Reserve, and is expected to generate approximately 1.2 million CRTs over its life.
The project is located in rugged, mountainous terrain without access to existing utility infrastructure, which limits feasible abatement options to simple incineration. The project is anticipated to have the first operating flare on an active underground coal mine in the U.S. The flare will be located at the wellhead of the mine’s highest producing gob well.
Sindicatum has an advisory role on this project. Sindicatum is responsible for activities that are associated with certification of the project. This includes writing project documentation and managing the project validation/verification, as well as advising Cliffs on monetization of its carbon credit portfolio.
