Sindicatum Projects
Agricultural Solutions, Indonesia: PT BIOGAS, Lampung Province
Through PT Biogas, a company set up as a platform to hold our waste to biogas projects, we are now looking to scale up what we believe is a substantial biogas opportunity in the Indonesian market. The first pilot project, the Indo Ethanol project, is located in Lampung, southern Sumatera. Indo Ethanol manufactures food and medicinal grade ethanol using locally grown cassava. The ethanol manufacturing process produces waste water that traditionally has been allowed to decompose in open lagoons and local water courses. This practice used to result in substantial release of green house gases and other pollutants. Sindicatum has installed a waste water treatment plant at Indo Ethanol that captures methane gas that would otherwise have been released to the atmosphere. The project is currently undergoing the UNFCCC approval process, and should generate 0.7 million CERs over its life.
The Indo Ethanol project uses anaerobic digestion technology provided by Waste Solutions to create a controlled and enclosed version of the natural organic waste breakdown process in order to capture and exploit the methane that was an otherwise wasted energy resource. The Covered In-Ground Anaerobic Reactors (“Cigar®”) technology deployed comprises a uniquely designed lagoon process which utilizes mixers, baffles and a thick high-density polyethylene cover and is proven to remove organic matter. The digester is highly refined, robustly engineered and offers the highest biogas yield on the market. Methane Biogas collected from the digester is cleaned and compressed and supplied to meet the energy needs of Indo Ethanol’s manufacturing process.
Sindicatum is an equity partner in PT Biogas. For the Indo Ethanol project, Sindicatum has funded and installed the methane capture system.
